Air Quality Criteria

In the following table pollutants criteria to asses health damage are shown. Criteria established in Italy, United States and by WHO (World Health Organization) are reported. Units read: µg/m³ = micrograms per cubed meter, mg/m³ = milligrams per cubed meter and ppm = parts per million. Timings in parenteses refer to the averaging period over which the indicated threshold must not be violated.

Species Italy USA WHO Effects on Health
Particulate PM10 40 µg/m³ (1 y) 50 µg/m³ (1 y) - -
50 µg/m³ (24 h) 150 µg/m³ (24 h) 150 µg/m³ (24 h)
Particulate PM2.5 - 15 µg/m³ (1 y) - -
Ozone (O3) 110 µg/m³ (8 h) 0.08 ppm (8 h) 0.06 ppm (8 h) -
180 µg/m³ (1 h) 0.12 ppm (1 h) 0.08 ppm (1 h)
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) 40 µg/m³ (1 y) 0.053 ppm or 100 µg/m³ (1 y) - -
200 µg/m³ (1 h) 0.21 ppm (1 h) 0.21 ppm (1 h)
Carbon Monoxide (CO) 10 mg/m³ (8 h) 9 ppm or 10 mg/m³ (8 h) 9 ppm (8 h) -
